Birday Card

It was exactly midnight that fateful morning when my better and only half kissed and wished me a Happy Birthday. Apparently with a single forward motion of the clock dial, I turned forty years old. So, I woke up very early that morning and went to talk to Baba God in his House. On getting… [Read more…]

I have this seven or eight year old Toshiba notebook that has served me very well through two continents and I honestly have not had any issues with this system except if you count busy-body people that will not mind their own business when they see my computer. They will first look at the computer… [Read more…]

Mummy Ikoyi

Mam’s 1971 It’s the very simple things I tell you. Like this morning when I awoke, I would have loved to join her in her daily routine and share a cup of tea in her garden. She used to just sit there, almost statuette, her Rosary in one hand, a cup of tea in another and… [Read more…]

She explained that I will feel ok one minute and be totally oblivious to the disease I had. That was when I realized why I have always avoided hospitals. One minute I was ok and now this nice woman is categorizing me as having a ‘disease.’ The last time I visited a hospital over a simple abdominal ache that would not go away, the man checked and checked and checked and finally applied petroleum jelly on one finger and put it where only things are supposed to come out from.

Some people say that the things worrying me are plenty but I don’t listen or agree with them at all. We all have things worrying us and the only difference is the way we choose to display the worry. Me, I choose to write about mine and sometimes, good or bad, they sometimes find their… [Read more…]

Every time I see one of those paid advertorials I never fail to imagine the revenue generated by newspaper organizations. The content of the advertorial does ignite some curiosity on my part though. Just recently some people deemed it fit to… [Read more…]

Ligali Ayorinde Road Construction

February 16, 2010

Over a year ago I was a commuter witness to the unearthing of the drainage gutters on Ligali Ayorinde. It happened daily with purposeful intensity that was commendable. Daily, I drove past construction workers sweating profusely as they took measurements, poured concrete and laid iron rods where sand and debris had once occupied. That was… [Read more…]

Modern Banking In Nigeria

February 6, 2010

So I went into my Bank to make a deposit this morning. In the Banking hall I realize things have dramatically changed since the ‘tally number days.’ Sleek computer monitors, sleeker smart work-desk stationed everywhere, towering mobile air conditioner units and the number of beautiful women waiting for your signal to be of assistance to… [Read more…]

The Nigerian Gene

December 17, 2009

Ever since that small Oyibo boy who was maybe twelve or thirteen years old disgraced me on a flight from Chicago to Little Rock, I concluded that the ‘Nigerian’ in me liked life too much. Come and see how my tummy was shaking when the plane encountered turbulence that day. The plane was shacking so much… [Read more…]

Organized Insanity Don’t be deceived; there’s a method to the insanity you recognize in Nigeria. It stares you in the face daily and unless you give some thought to it, you’ll miss the sensibility crafted into the situation. For instance, you see that stagnant gutter being cleared and then, the debris excavated is heaped on the… [Read more…]
